ʻĀinakō Subdivision Housing Project Community Meeting

The County of Hawai‘i Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) will host a community meeting to share information and gather feedback on the proposed ʻĀinakō Subdivision Housing Project in Hilo.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Aupuni Center Conference Room, 101 Pauahi Street, in Hilo.
Community members are invited to drop in anytime during the open house–style meeting, which will feature project display boards and opportunities for questions and dialogue with OHCD staff and project team members.

The ʻĀinakō Subdivision Housing Project proposes a mix of affordable single-family and multi-family homes on a 60.59-acre County of Hawaiʻi-owned parcel near the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. It is planned in two phases to provide up to 144 new workforce housing units to support area residents.

To request an auxiliary aid/service or other accommodation due to a disability for the October 23, 2025, meeting, please contact Neil Erickson, at neilc.erickson@hawaiicounty.gov at least seven days before the meeting.

A draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Project was published in The Environmental Notice on October 8, 2025, kicking off a 30-day public comment period that runs through November 7, 2025.

Community members are encouraged to review the draft EA and attend the October 23, 2025, meeting to share input and ask questions. The draft EA is available online at https://files.hawaii.gov/dbedt/erp/Doc_Library/2025-10-08-HA-DEA-Ainako-Subdivision-Housing-Project.pdf.

The OHCD has also established a web page to keep the community updated on the project at https://www.housing.hawaiicounty.gov/development-preservation/county-development-projects/ainako.
