The Haihai Street Workforce Housing project is proposed to be developed on approximately 30 acres in South Hilo.
Located on Haihai Street, across from the Hilo Municipal Golf, the State land is under Executive Order to the County of Hawai‘i for the purpose of developing affordable housing.
While in the early feasibility and planning stages, the site is envisioned to provide both homeownership and rental opportunities for households earning up to 140% of Area Median Income (AMI).
Currently targeted are single-family lots that would offer leasehold homeownership opportunities and multi-family rental units.
The Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) has contracted with an engineering firm to conduct a feasibility study and environmental assessment. These studies will assess key factors such as traffic patterns, environmental impact, and the presence of flora and fauna.
Once these studies are complete, the OHCD will be in a better position to determine if the proposed affordable housing project is feasible. This work is anticipated to be complete by mid-2025.
